Emerging

Emerging according to the Driving standard agency definition is when a vehicle leaves a minor road to join, cross or turn into a major road. Make good observations, in all directions, before emerging.
Assess the speed of other vehicles, take advantage of safe gaps as they arise, do not cause other vehicles to change speed or direction by your actions.

To understand emerging you need to know what a "Give Way" and a "STOP" sign means according to the Highway Code:

A GIV WAY   sign or lines across the road means that you must give way to traffic which is already on the road that you intend to enter. However, if you can emerge out of the road without causing any driver or rider to change speed or direction, you can do so without stopping, this is only possible in open junction ‘give ways’ where the view of the road is clear before you approach the end of the road.

A STOP sign means that you must always stop at STOP sign regardless the traffic on the road you intend to enter.

As you approach the end of the road try to decide whether the junction is Open or Closed.

  • An OPEN junction is when you have a perfect view into both sides of the new road you wish to emerge
  • An CLOSED junction is when you do not have a perfect or limited view of the new road you wish to emerge
